Dandruff, known as Darunaka in Ayurveda, is a common scalp condition marked by flaky skin, itching, and irritation. According to Ayurvedic principles, dandruff results from an imbalance in the Vata and Kapha doshas, leading to dryness or excessive oiliness of the scalp. Rather than masking the symptoms, Ayurveda focuses on correcting the root cause through herbal treatments, dietary changes, and lifestyle adjustments.

1. Ayurvedic Oils for Dandruff

a) Neem Oil (Azadirachta indica)

Neem is a powerful antifungal and antibacterial herb used extensively in Ayurvedic skin treatments. Its cooling and purifying properties help reduce itching and inflammation.

  • Usage: Warm neem oil and apply to the scalp. Leave it on for 30–60 minutes before washing with a mild herbal shampoo.

b) Coconut Oil with Camphor

This blend soothes irritation and helps to reduce dandruff caused by excess dryness.

  • Usage: Mix a pinch of edible camphor with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Massage gently onto the scalp before bedtime and rinse in the morning.

c) Bhringraj Oil

Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) nourishes the scalp and strengthens hair roots. It balances the Pitta dosha, which is often associated with inflammation and hair issues.

  • Usage: Apply warm Bhringraj oil twice a week for deep conditioning and dandruff control.

2. Herbal Hair Masks

a) Fenugreek (Methi) Paste

Fenugreek seeds are rich in protein and nicotinic acid, which fight dandruff and promote healthy hair.

  • How to Use: Soak 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds overnight, grind into a paste, and apply to the scalp. Leave it for 30 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water.

b) Amla and Shikakai Pack

Amla (Indian gooseberry) and Shikakai cleanse the scalp naturally and restore its pH balance.

  • How to Use: Mix Amla powder and Shikakai powder with water to form a paste. Apply to the scalp and hair. Rinse after 20–30 minutes.

3. Herbal Rinses

Neem and Tulsi Rinse

Boil neem leaves and tulsi (holy basil) in water. After cooling, strain the liquid and use it as a final rinse after shampooing.

  • This rinse reduces fungal infections and soothes an itchy scalp.

4. Internal Remedies and Diet

Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of internal health for skin and scalp issues:

  • Triphala Churna: A mild detoxifier that helps balance doshas and supports digestion.

  • Chyawanprash or Mahadrakshadi Rasayana: Improves immunity and skin health.

  • Avoid oily, spicy, and junk foods which aggravate Kapha and Pitta.

  • Drink warm water and herbal teas like ginger or licorice tea to detoxify the system.

5. Lifestyle and Routine

  • Scalp Massage (Shiro Abhyanga): Regular oil massage increases blood circulation and maintains scalp health.

  • Yoga and Pranayama: Stress often worsens dandruff. Practice yoga poses like Sarvangasana, Uttanasana, and breathing exercises for balance.

  • Sleep: Ensure at least 7–8 hours of restful sleep to maintain hormonal and doshic balance.

Ayurveda offers a gentle, holistic path to managing dandruff by addressing internal imbalances and external triggers. Unlike chemical treatments, Ayurvedic remedies focus on long-term health and harmony. Consistency, patience, and mindful living are key to experiencing the full benefits of these natural treatments.
